Alex Manea

Meet Alex, a 4th year Honours student currently completing a Bachelor of Applied Science (Speech Pathology) at the University of Sydney (USYD). Having previously been a disability support worker, tutor and volunteer for youths living with intellectual and physical disabilities, she has a passion for improving the quality of life of people living with an impairment.

Alex reaped the benefits of speech pathology services as a child and recognises the importance of early intervention. She enjoys collaborating with clients and their families to create individualised treatment plans that address their needs and capitalise on clients’ strengths. Ultimately, Alex works to support each client to achieve their individual goals.

Alex has completed placements in preschools, primary schools, hospitals and the student-led clinic on the USYD campus. Alex has treated children and adults with a variety of conditions, including speech sounds disorders, childhood apraxia of speech, voice disorders and language and literacy disorders. Alex is about to complete her final placement with the Cerebral Palsy Alliance. These placements have provided her with invaluable experience working in a wide range of settings.

Alex also possesses a keen interest in research. She has completed an internship at the Children’s Cancer Research Unit at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead and worked as a research assistant on an international USYD project regarding therapy for childhood apraxia of speech. Alex is particularly interested in traumatic brain injury and is currently completing her Honours thesis on conversation in individuals with moderate-severe traumatic brain injury.

Alex likes walking her dog, Cookie, whilst also enjoying watching movies and seeing live bands. Alex is also an avid basketball fan and is a long-time supporter of the mighty Illawarra Hawks!
